Before burial or cremation, the body of a deceased person is placed in a coffin.
The impermeable cover that may be used to wrap the body before it is placed in the coffin is made from a biodegradable material. It must meet the compositional, resistance and waterproofing characteristics set by order of the minister responsible for health after receiving the opinion of the Agence nationale de sécurité sanitaire de l’alimentation, de l’environnement et du travail and the Conseil national des opérations funéraires.
If the deceased person is wearing a battery-operated prosthesis, a doctor or thanatopractor will explant it and certify that the prosthesis has been recovered before the body is laid to rest. However, explantation is not required if the battery-operated prosthesis is on the list established by order of the Ministers of the Interior and of Health after consultation with the Haut Conseil de la santé publique, with regard to the risks presented in terms of the environment or the safety of property and persons. This order may make a distinction depending on whether the person is buried or cremated.
