Article R2213-17 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

The closing of the coffin is authorised by the mayor of the place of death or, where the first paragraph of article R. 2213-7, by the mayor of the place where the body is deposited, in compliance with the provisions of article L. 2223-42.

The authorisation, drawn up on plain paper and free of charge, is issued on presentation of the death certificate issued by the doctor who witnessed the death and certifying that the death poses no medico-legal problem.

Article R2213-17

La fermeture du cercueil est autorisée par le maire du lieu de décès ou, en cas d’application du premier alinéa de l’article R. 2213-7, par le maire du lieu de dépôt du corps, dans le respect des dispositions de l’article L. 2223-42.

L’autorisation, établie sur papier libre et sans frais, est délivrée sur présentation du certificat de décès établi par le médecin ayant constaté le décès et attestant que celui-ci ne pose pas de problème médico-légal.
