Article R2213-20 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

The coffin lid is fitted with an engraved plaque showing the year of death and, if known, the year of birth, the first name, surname and, if applicable, the customary name of the deceased.

After completion of the formalities prescribed in the articles 78,79 and 80 of the Civil Code and in article R. 2213-17 of this code, the coffin is finally closed.

Le couvercle du cercueil est muni d’une plaque gravée indiquant l’année de décès et, s’ils sont connus, l’année de naissance, le prénom, le nom de famille et, s’il y a lieu, le nom d’usage du défunt.

Après accomplissement des formalités prescrites aux articles 78,79 et 80 du code civil et à l’article R. 2213-17 du présent code, il est procédé à la fermeture définitive du cercueil.
