Article R2223-77 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

When death has occurred on the public highway or in a place open to the public, admission of the body to a funeral home is requested by the police or gendarmerie authorities.

A doctor is assigned to ascertain beforehand the reality and cause of death.

In the cases provided for in article 81 of the Civil Code and in article 74 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the admission of a body to a funeral home is authorised by the public prosecutor.

Lorsque le décès a eu lieu sur la voie publique ou dans un lieu ouvert au public, l’admission du corps en chambre funéraire est requise par les autorités de police ou de gendarmerie.

Un médecin est commis pour s’assurer auparavant de la réalité et de la cause du décès.

Dans les cas prévus à l’article 81 du code civil et à l’article 74 du code de procédure pénale, l’admission d’un corps en chambre funéraire est autorisée par le procureur de la République.
