Article R2531-29 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

The committee elects its chairman from among its members by secret ballot by an absolute majority.

If, after two ballots, no member of the committee has obtained an absolute majority, a third ballot is held and the election is by relative majority.

In the event of a tie, the oldest member is declared elected.

The chairman is elected until the renewal of the representatives of the groups of communes and mayors following the general renewal of the municipal councils. However, a new election is held in the event of death, resignation or loss of the capacity in which he was elected.

Article R2531-29
