Article L3142-7 of the French Labour Code

The leave starts or is renewed at the employee’s initiative. The duration of the leave is set by the employee, within the limit provided for in 1° of article L. 3142-14 or, in the absence of an agreement, within the limit provided for in 1° of article L. 3142-15.

In the event of an absolute emergency recorded in writing by the doctor, the leave begins or may be renewed without delay.

The leave ends either at the end of the period mentioned in the first paragraph of this article, or within three days of the death of the person assisted, without prejudice to the benefit of the provisions relating to leave for personal events and leave for family events, or at an earlier date chosen by the employee.

Article L3142-7

Le congé débute ou est renouvelé à l’initiative du salarié. La durée du congé est fixée par le salarié, dans la limite prévue au 1° de l’article L. 3142-14 ou, à défaut d’accord, dans la limite prévue au 1° de l’article L. 3142-15.

En cas d’urgence absolue constatée par écrit par le médecin, le congé débute ou peut être renouvelé sans délai.

Le congé prend fin soit à l’expiration de la durée mentionnée au premier alinéa du présent article, soit dans les trois jours qui suivent le décès de la personne assistée, sans préjudice du bénéfice des dispositions relatives aux congés pour événements personnels et aux congés pour événements familiaux, soit à une date antérieure choisie par le salarié.
