Article R341-4 of the French Insurance Code

Unless an exception is authorised by the Autorité de contrôle prudentiel pursuant to article L. 341-4, the financial year begins on 1 January and ends on 31 December of each year. By way of exception, the first financial year of French companies commencing operations during a calendar year may be closed at the end of the following year.

Sauf dérogation autorisée par l’Autorité de contrôle prudentiel en application de l’article L. 341-4, l’exercice comptable commence le 1er janvier et finit le 31 décembre de chaque année. Exceptionnellement, le premier exercice comptable des entreprises françaises qui commencent leurs opérations au cours d’une année civile peut être clôturé à l’expiration de l’année suivante.
