Burial or deposit in a temporary vault takes place:
-if the death occurred in France, at least twenty-four hours and no more than six days after the death;
-if the death occurred in the overseas collectivities, New Caledonia or abroad, no more than six days after the body entered France.
Sundays and public holidays are not included in the calculation of these time limits.
In the event of a medico-legal problem, the six-day time limit runs from the date on which the public prosecutor issues authorisation for burial.
Exceptions to the time limits laid down in the second and third paragraphs may be granted in special circumstances by the prefect of the department in which the burial is to take place, who shall prescribe any necessary arrangements. When the body is transported outside metropolitan territory or an overseas department, derogations are granted by the prefect of the department of the place where the coffin is closed.
