The provisions of this chapter apply to all manual handling operations involving risks, particularly of a back or lumbar nature, for workers due to the characteristics of the load or unfavourable ergonomic conditions.
Manual handling means any operation of transporting or supporting a load, including lifting, placing, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving, which requires the physical effort of one or more workers.
The employer shall take appropriate organisational measures or use appropriate means, in particular mechanical equipment, to avoid the need for workers to handle loads manually.
Where the need for manual handling of loads cannot be avoided, in particular due to the configuration of the premises where such handling is carried out, the employer shall take the appropriate organisational measures or make available to workers the appropriate means, if necessary by combining their effects, so as to limit the physical effort and reduce the risk incurred during this operation.
Where manual handling cannot be avoided, the employer: 1° Evaluates the risks to workers’ health and safety arising from handling operations; 2° Organises workstations in such a way as to avoid or reduce risks, particularly back and lumbar risks, in particular by providing workers with mechanical aids or, if they cannot be used, gripping accessories to make their work safer and less arduous.
When assessing risks and organising workstations, the employer shall take into account: 1° The characteristics of the workload, the physical effort required, the characteristics of the working environment and the requirements of the activity; 2° Individual risk factors, as defined by joint order of the ministers responsible for labour and agriculture.
The employer must ensure that workers are given estimates and, wherever possible, precise information on the weight of the load and the position of its centre of gravity or heaviest side when the load is placed off-centre in a package.
The employer shall provide workers whose work involves manual handling with: 1° Information on the risks they incur when the activities are not performed in a technically correct manner, taking into account the individual risk factors defined by the order provided for in article R. 4541-6; 2° Appropriate safety training relating to the performance of these operations.
