The rules for labelling a product that is recognised as an appellation of origin, protected geographical indication or traditional speciality guaranteed are laid down under the conditions set out in article L. 412-1.
A foodstuff may only be marketed if it is accompanied by a statement that makes it possible to identify the batch to which it belongs. A “batch” is defined as a set of sales units of a foodstuff that has been produced, manufactured or packaged under practically identical circumstances.
When foodstuffs are pre-packaged, the indication identifying the batch and, where applicable, the letter “L” appear on the pre-packaging or on a label attached to it. However, when the date of minimum durability or the use-by date appears on the labelling, the manufacturing batch may not be indicated as long as this date consists of the indication, in clear and in order, of at least the day and the month.
When foodstuffs are not pre-packaged, the indication and, where appropriate, the letter “L” appear on the packaging or container or, failing this, on the commercial documents referring to them. In all cases, it must be easily visible, clearly legible and indelible.
The following foodstuffs are exempt from lot identification:1° Agricultural products which, on leaving the farm, are:a) Either sold or delivered to storage, conditioning or packaging stations;b) Or sent to producer organisations;c) Or collected with a view to their immediate use in a preparation or processing process;2° Foodstuffs, presented at the point of sale to the final consumer, which:a) Are not pre-packaged, including when they are subsequently packaged at the request…
