Sports associations are formed in accordance with the provisions of the law of 1st July 1901 relating to the contract of association or, when their registered office is in the departments of Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin and Moselle, in accordance with the local civil code.
School and university sports associations are subject to the provisions of this Code and Books V and VIII of the Education Code.
Subject to the approval referred to in article L. 121-4, sports associations that promote and organise physical and sports activities for disabled people may receive assistance from the public authorities, particularly in terms of sports practice, access to sports facilities, organisation of competitions, training of sports instructors and adaptation of transport. Sports associations, particularly those for schools, universities and companies, are open to disabled people.
Sports associations can only benefit from State aid if they have been approved. Managers of a sports association who hold a licence issued by an approved federation and who, on a voluntary basis, carry out management and supervisory duties within their federation or an association affiliated to it may use their personal training account under the conditions set out in Chapter III of Title II of Book III of the French Labour Code, in order to undertake training related to their voluntary role.
In public administrations and establishments, the organisation and management of physical and sporting activities may be entrusted to one or more sports associations in which staff participate within the framework of article 9 of law no. 83-634 of 13 July 1983 on the rights and obligations of civil servants.

Physical and sports activities are organised by a company sports association or an association of several companies. This association is set up in accordance with article L. 121-1 of this Code and article L. 432-8 of the Labour Code. The works council and the sports association agree annually on the objectives pursued and the resources allocated to achieve them.
