Chapter II: Departmental maternal and child protection service

The medico-social actions mentioned in 1° and 4° of article L. 2112-2 and concerning pregnant women are designed in particular to ensure regular monitoring of the progress of pregnancy and foetal growth through early detection of maternal and foetal pathologies and their management in conjunction with the obstetric teams concerned.

The medico-social actions mentioned in 2° and 4° of article L. 2112-2 and concerning children under the age of six are intended in particular to ensure, through consultations and preventive examinations of children carried out in particular in nursery schools, the monitoring of the child’s growth and physical, psychomotor and emotional development as well as the early detection of anomalies or deficiencies and the carrying out of vaccinations.

The family planning and family education activities referred to in 3° of article L. 2112-2 are organised under the conditions laid down in Chapter I of Title I of Book III of this Part.

In addition to individual or collective medical and social prevention activities, the departmental service must, either directly or by means of an agreement, organise at least sixteen half-days of prenatal consultations and family planning or education per week for every 100,000 inhabitants aged between fifteen and fifty residing in the department, including at least four half-days of prenatal consultations.

In addition to individual or group medical and social prevention activities, particularly in nursery schools, the service must, either directly or by agreement, organise a half-day consultation each week for children under the age of six for 200 children born alive during the previous calendar year to parents residing in the département.

The departmental service must have : 1° One full-time midwife or the equivalent for every 1,500 children born alive during the previous calendar year to parents residing in the department; 2° One full-time nursery nurse or its equivalent for every 250 children born alive during the previous calendar year to parents residing in the department.
