The principle of optimisation is applied to exposures likely to be received by people involved in supporting and comforting patients. A dose constraint is established, where necessary, by the person performing the procedure to avoid excessive exposure of these people, taking into account the recommendations of good professional practice.
In his report, the person performing the procedure must indicate the information on the basis of which he considered the procedure justified and the information relating to the patient’s exposure, in particular the procedures performed and any information useful for estimating the dose received by the patient.
The average exposure of the population to ionising radiation from medical diagnostic procedures, by imaging modality, anatomical region, age and sex, is estimated and analysed periodically by the Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire and is the subject of a public report that can be consulted on the Institute’s website.

The person carrying out the procedure using ionising radiation for medical purposes must take all necessary steps, particularly within the framework of the quality assurance system, to reduce the probability and extent of accidental or unintentional exposure.
For each piece of equipment and for each category of patient concerned, in particular children and pregnant or breastfeeding women, the person performing the procedure draws up a written procedure for each type of procedure. These procedures take account of good practice recommendations and are updated to reflect the state of the art. They are permanently available near the equipment concerned. They are checked as part of the clinical audit.
When the owner of a medical device emitting ionising radiation makes it available to a self-employed health professional, he must ensure that it is working properly and that the persons required to use it are qualified. He must provide the Regional Health Agency and the Nuclear Safety Authority with a list of these professionals and their contact details.
The French Nuclear Safety Authority shall inform healthcare professionals of the lessons drawn from the analysis of events likely to affect the health of persons, as referred to in Article L. 1333-13, where these events are of interest from the point of view of the radiation protection of patients.
