Article R412-3 of the French Consumer Code

A foodstuff may only be marketed if it is accompanied by a statement that makes it possible to identify the batch to which it belongs. A “batch” is defined as a set of sales units of a foodstuff that has been produced, manufactured or packaged under practically identical circumstances.

Article R412-4 of the French Consumer Code

When foodstuffs are pre-packaged, the indication identifying the batch and, where applicable, the letter “L” appear on the pre-packaging or on a label attached to it. However, when the date of minimum durability or the use-by date appears on the labelling, the manufacturing batch may not be indicated as long as this date consists of the indication, in clear and in order, of at least the day and the month.
