Non-collective sanitation zones may be set up in those parts of a municipality where the installation of a wastewater collection system is not justified, either because it is not in the interest of the environment or public health, or because its cost would be excessive.

The public enquiry prior to the delimitation of the zones mentioned in article L. 2224-10 is conducted by the mayor or the president of the competent public establishment for inter-communal cooperation, in the forms provided for by the articles R. 123-1 to R. 123-27 of the Environment Code.
