All neonatal intensive care units have a minimum of six intensive care beds. The health establishment where it is located has a neonatology unit with at least nine beds, including at least three beds allocated to intensive care. The unit comprises : 1° A room where parents can be welcomed ; 2° An area for monitoring and resuscitating children where newborn babies are hospitalised; this area also includes a zone for medical preparation before transfer; 3° An area for feeding newborn babies, which may be shared by the obstetrics and neonatology units.

An order issued by the Minister for Health specifies the medical equipment available in the intensive care and monitoring sector. This order also specifies the examinations that can be carried out, including in an emergency, every day of the year, 24 hours a day, whether in the unit or on its site.

Neonates requiring neonatal intensive care may be hospitalised in undifferentiated paediatric and neonatal intensive care units, provided that the beds for these neonates form an individual sector within the multi-purpose unit.
