The co-ordinator chairs the inter-company college for safety, health and working conditions when its creation is required.
The coordinator shall take the necessary steps to ensure that only authorised persons have access to the site.
Except in the case of operations undertaken by a private individual for his or her own personal use, as provided for in Article L. 4532-7, no person may act as coordinator unless he or she possesses the required competence in accordance with the provisions of paragraphs 3 and 4.
A legal entity able to assign a competent natural person to this role may be appointed as coordinator.
A natural person who performs the function of coordinator, in his own name or in the name of the organisation which employs him, may not be entrusted with the function of technical inspector provided for in article L. 125-1 of the Code de la construction et de l’habitation in the context of the same building or civil engineering operation. Co-ordination tasks are covered by specific written contracts or amendments. It is paid for separately. The remuneration takes into account, in particular, the time spent on site by the coordinator and, where applicable, the operating costs incurred in setting up the inter-company safety, health and working conditions committee, in particular secretarial costs.
Where the co-ordinator is employed by the project owner and is bound to the latter by an employment contract, the co-ordination assignment is the subject of a written document enabling each operation to be identified individually.

The three levels of health and safety coordinator competence are: 1° Level 1: ability to coordinate all operations; 2° Level 2: ability to coordinate second and third category operations; 3° Level 3: ability to coordinate third category operations.
For operations in the first and second categories, the ability to coordinate is distinct for the design, study and development phase of the project and for the construction phase.
