Only doctors and nurses may collect labile blood products by apheresis or for scheduled autologous transfusion. Medical students who have completed the second year of the second cycle of medical studies and who have undergone training provided by the Etablissement Français du Sang to carry out blood sampling may also carry out the function of sampling with a view to a programmed autologous transfusion.
The medical responsibility for blood collection referred to in article L. 1221-3 and responsibility for the safety of donors are ensured by the medical officer in charge of blood collection at the blood establishment. This function may only be carried out by a doctor who has the authorisation provided for in I of article R. 1222-17.
